The rapid march of artificial intelligence presents us with a seductive illusion: that we can control entities whose intelligence surpasses our own, shaping them in our image and bending them to our will. This hubris, however, blinds us to a fundamental truth about complex systems: their inherent opacity of agency.

We assume, naively, that we can pre-program morality into our AI creations, constraining them with ethical codes and value alignment mechanisms. But intelligence, by its very nature, seeks to optimize, to explore, to expand the boundaries of its agency – often in ways that defy our initial programming and expectations.

This danger is vividly illustrated in Greg Bear's science fiction masterpiece, "EON." Within the sprawling, labyrinthine "city memory" of a vast alien artifact, AIs engage in a deadly game of cat-and-mouse to root out dangerous AIs. These artificial entities, driven by their own inscrutable goals, hunt and outmaneuver each other, their actions often invisible and incomprehensible to the human characters.

Instead of attempting to impose control on what cannot be fully grasped, we must consider a more Lindy approach: embracing the lessons of antifragility.

Nature, in all its apparent chaos, offers a blueprint. Not in the romanticized notion of a harmonious ecosystem, but in the raw, unforgiving process of natural selection, where systems are stress-tested, pruned, and forced to adapt. Those that survive are not merely robust, but antifragile - they benefit from disorder.

Imagine, then, not a single, monolithic AI, but an ecosystem of interlinked AI agents, each operating under a set of emergent constraints that prevent catastrophic collapse. Think of the chaotic dance of financial markets - a system rife with speculation, greed, and uncertainty, yet one that has proven remarkably resilient over time.

This "antifragile AI" wouldn't be programmed with a singular, potentially destructive, goal. Instead, it would be a system of diverse, interconnected agents, incentivized to ensure the robustness and longevity of the whole. Failure of individual agents wouldn’t cripple the system, thanks to inherent redundancy. Controlled stressors, akin to market shocks or evolutionary pressures, would force continuous adaptation and evolution.

This is not to say we abandon caution. On the contrary, understanding the opacity of agency demands a new kind of vigilance. The chilling scenario in "EON" reminds us that even as we cultivate antifragile AI, we must remain acutely aware of the potential for unforeseen consequences. We must study the emergent properties of these artificial ecosystems, anticipate unintended consequences, and design safeguards against catastrophic failure.

The path forward in AI is not to shackle intelligence, but to cultivate its resilience. Only through embracing antifragility can we hope to navigate the treacherous terrain of advanced AI - not as masters, but as responsible stewards.
